چکیده

A new formulation of the immersed boundary method with a structure algebraically identical to the traditional fractional step method is presented for incompressible flow over bodies with prescribed surface motion. Like previous methods, a boundary force is applied at the immersed surface to satisfy the no-slip constraint. This extra constraint can be added to the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations by introducing regularization and interpolation operators. The current method gives prominence to the role of the boundary force acting as a Lagrange multiplier to satisfy the no-slip condition. This role is analogous to the effect of pressure on the momentum equation to satisfy the divergence-free constraint. The current immersed boundary method removes slip and non-divergence-free components of the velocity field through a projection. The boundary force is determined implicitly without any constitutive relations allowing the present formulation to use larger CFL numbers compared to some past methods. Symmetry and positive-definiteness of the system are preserved such that the conjugate gradient method can be used to solve for the flow field. Examples show that the current formulation achieves second-order temporal accuracy and better than first-order spatial accuracy in L2-norms for oneand two-dimensional test problems. Results from two-dimensional simulations of flows over stationary and moving cylinders are in good agreement with those from previous experimental and numerical studies. 2007 Elsevier Inc. On the Volume Conservation of the Immersed Boundary Method

The immersed boundary (IB) method is an approach to problems of fluid-structure interaction in which an elastic structure is immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid. The IB formulation of such problems uses a Lagrangian description of the structure and an Eulerian description of the fluid. It is well known that some versions of the IB method can suffer from poor volume conservation. Methods ...

A Second-Order Immersed Boundary Projection Method for Elliptic and Parabolic Problems

We present a second-order accurate version of the Immersed Boundary Projection Method for imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions at irregular boundaries while using a Cartesian grid and a standard discretization, applicable to elliptic and parabolic PDEs. No modi cation to the stencil is required. Rather, boundary conditions are enforced by applying a force at the boundary that is unknown a pri...

A Fast Immersed Boundary Fourier Pseudo-spectral Method for Simulation of the Incompressible Flows

Abstract   The present paper is devoted to implementation of the immersed boundary technique into the Fourier pseudo-spectral solution of the vorticity-velocity formulation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The immersed boundary conditions are implemented via direct modification of the convection and diffusion terms, and therefore, in contrast to some other similar ...

An immersed boundary method by the lattice Boltzmann approach in three dimensions with application

The immersed boundary (IB) method originated by Peskin has been popular in modeling and simulating problems involving the interaction of a flexible structure and a viscous incompressible fluid. The Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations in the IB method are usually solved using numerical methods such as FFT and projection methods. Here in our work, the N-S equations are solved by an alternative approach...

cuIBM -- A GPU-accelerated Immersed Boundary Method

A projection-based immersed boundary method is dominated by sparse linear algebra routines. Using the open-source Cusp library, we observe a speedup (with respect to a single cpu core) which reflects the constraints of a bandwidth-dominated problem on the gpu. Nevertheless, gpus offer the capacity to solve large problems on commodity hardware. This work includes validation and a convergence stu...
